Chapter 26

Lasgol, Eicewald, and Camu crossed the last trees, and what they found left them with their mouths hanging open. A great expanse entirely free of trees and shrubbery was before their eyes. Not a single plant, only clear ground as far as the eye could see. They stopped to look in awe.

“This is weird,” Lasgol said, scanning the place. It seemed like nothing grew in this area. He was aware they were still inside the sacred Druid forest which was full of trees, bushes, and life, but this place was some anomaly of nature.

“It is,” Eicewald agreed as he bent over to touch the earth with his hand. He closed his eyes and, concentrating, cast a spell. Freezing energy issued from his hand and spread, covering a small area around his palm. He raised his hand and looked at it. The layer of frost he had created was already fading, as if another, stronger force was destroying it.

Lasgol felt the hair at the back of his neck stand on end and a shiver run down his spine.

Powerful magic, Camu messaged.

“It is, it devoured my spell in no time,” Eicewald replied as he scanned the clearing. “This place is special… as I had expected…”

Lasgol saw two figures appear in the horizon, Egil and Ona.

“Let’s keep going, they’re further ahead.”

The three walked briskly toward their friends. Lasgol kept glancing back in case they were being chased. Eicewald had told them the Druids never entered this place and he was hoping they would not, but just in case he looked behind them. It did not take long for him to see the Druids, and they were remaining at the edge of the trees. The tree-beings also appeared but did not come forward. Lasgol snorted in relief—they were safe for the time being. Then he thought again and became uneasy. If the Druids were unwilling to enter this place, it must be for a reason, and it would not be a good one considering how powerful they were and that this was their forest.

They reached the rest of the group. Nilsa, Ingrid, and Egil were sitting on the ground, Ona lying beside them. Astrid had left the unconscious princess on the ground too. Viggo and Valeria were on their feet, looking at them as they arrived.

“High time!” Viggo said in welcome but smiled to show he meant it as a joke.

“Trouble?” Astrid asked them, coming over to Lasgol and stroking his hair tenderly.

Meet tree-beings, very fascinating, Camu messaged, explaining in his own particular way.

Egil’s eyes widened at once.

“Tree-beings? Very fascinating?” he asked eagerly.

Lasgol explained succinctly everything they had been through and the tricks they had used to escape.

“It certainly sounds most fascinating,” Egil confirmed. “It would’ve been fantastic to see.”

“They’re already at the edge of the trees, but you’d better not go near, just in case. I’m not a hundred percent sure they won’t come into the clearing,” Lasgol said as he looked to the north. With his Hawk’s Eye skill he could see them amid the trees.
